It's been a while since I've done a proper jump shot. Figured I'd get another one in before the end of my 365 Days project. This one is day 362, and it also happens to be the first jump shot in the new apartment. And this only took me 4 takes to do. :)
Kimberley and Kirt said they wanted to do some jump shots as part of their session. So, we went up to the roof of Mia’s apartment building, set up some lights, and did some jumps in the dark. It was awesome.
So, here’s a recent self-portrait that I shot for 365 Days. I took this one on Friday night and posted it on Saturday morning sort of expecting it to get a couple hundred views and maybe a handful of favorites (my jump shots usually get decent responses). There usually isn’t much Flickr activity on the weekends, so I didn’t think much would happen with this photo.
I was wrong.
Within the first couple hours of posting it, I got nearly 100 views and 10 favorites with a few comments thrown in. I left to go to Oktoberfest, and a few hours later, when some Flickrites showed up, they told me it had hit #1 on Explore. Hitting #1 that quickly usually means that there was a sudden rush of activity on the photo, and that normally doesn’t last very long. I figure that by the time I got back home later that night, it wouldn’t be anywhere on Explore.
Again, I was wrong.
Just about 12 hours after I posted the image, it was at 770 views, 74 favorites, and 61 comments. It was sitting firmly at #3 on Explore at that time. However, I figured that it was a slow weekend what with all of the end-of-summer activities happening and that it would be off Explore by Sunday morning.
Way off.
Overnight, the views shot up past 2000, there were over 100 faves, and I lost track of the comments. I watched the numbers on it throughout the day, and views, faves, and comments just kept increasing. It bounced around the top 10 on Explore, peaking at #2 and usually sitting somewhere between #8-15.
As of this writing (almost 1am Monday morning), it’s at 4070 views, 142 comments (a few of those are my responses), 260 faves, and #11 on Explore. It’s also become my “most interesting” photo. So much for my theory about slow weekends on Flickr.
On Wednesday night, a bunch of crazy Seattle Flickrites gathered at Greenlake to have some fun with lighting. We were originally scheduled to go down to SODO, but there was an M's game, and there was no way any of wanted to fight game-day traffic. I was really looking forward to working with some industrial settings, but Greenlake worked out in the end. The weather was gorgeous, and we found a large clearing that could handle 30+ photographers and all their lighting gear.
Since I was one of the people who actually had lighting gear to share, I ended up doing a tiny bit of instruction and helped with lighting setups for a couple of people. I only managed to get a few shots of my own, but, with 30 photographers in the area and many lighting beginners asking questions and trying out the remote triggers, I figured I wouldn't get much work done. Also, with so many photographers around, someone's bound to bust into your setup and grab a shot you've just spent 20 minutes setting up. Luckily, we only had a limited number of triggers, so not everyone got the perfectly lit photos. :)
I did come away from the meetup with this great shot of Brittney flying through the air with the sun flaring behind her. In this case, it was good having lots of people around. I used Fred and Rachel as "voice-activated lightstands" to aim the flashes illuminating either side of Brittney and had Kathleen holding up a gold reflector behind me to get some extra sunlight on Brittney's face. Jen got a great shot of all of this in action: the makings of a jump shot. I'm kneeing on the ground just behind Brittney's knee. The other photographers dropped in to get some action shots, and I didn't even realize they were there until after I got the shot.
Head on over to the Seattle Flickr Meetup group's photo pool to see more shots from the evening. It was much fun.
Flickr's Explore/Interestingness thingamajig is an odd beast. No one really knows how it works, yet people put so much value on images that make it onto Explore. While I don't do anything in particular to try to make it onto Explore, I do love it when one of my images even cracks in the top 500. It's just a little bit of validation that some people actually like my work.
This week has been a particularly good Explore week for me. Four of my images made it into the Interestingness archives, one of which is the shot I got of Brittney from earlier this week. That one is still in the top 20 for the day I uploaded it and is now one of my most popular images. The other big one is the image featured above, which is on its way to become my most popular image. As of this writing, it has over 1500 views, 107 favorites, 70+ comments (a couple are my own), and is currently sitting at #3 on Interestingess for the day. It's only been online for just over 24 hours, so those numbers are freakin' insane for me.
Despite those impressive numbers, I'm certain that the it will drop out of Explore soon enough. I'm guessing some photo of a cute little puppy will usurp me. That or a pretty sunset. :P
How's this for cool. This image was used to accompany Thursday's Strobist blog post. I was wondering where all those extra views came from. :P
This was a last-minute shot I did for Day 165 of 365 Days. As of this writing, it is currently sitting at #8 on Flickr's Explore list for June 15, 2007. I expect that it'll vanish from there soon enough. At least I have my moment of glory. :)
Brittney, Mark, and Paula were kind enough to volunteer for a jumping photo shoot I had to do over the weekend. I got a nice variety of jumps from all of them, and I think my client is going to be very happy with the results. Also, I think we provided some fun entertainment for the other people at the park.
I've got a bunch of shots in my Flickr photostream right now, and a few more will arrive later tonight. My buddy Scott got a bunch of cool shots, too. More to come soon.
Last Sunday, a bunch of friends and I went over to the University of Washington campus to check out the cherry blossoms and enjoy the freakishly nice weather we had. I knew the blossoms had started a while ago, and I was worried that there wouldn't be anything left to see. Luckily for us, the trees were still in full bloom. We spent the afternoon strolling around the quad and part of campus and taking all sorts of fun pictures with the trees. You can check out my set of photos over in my Flickr photostream.
